What's in TNNT for someone who usually dies before Gomorrah? I'll rack
up some neat achievements but they are dwarfed by others who know their
shit. I'm tired of hearing about ascensions as if that was all there
was to the game.

The fun :) I never even come close to Gomorrah, nevermind
ascending. But I have died in couple of interesting ways.
I am in it for the achievements, trying to get them is
rather fun.

I have been playing nethack for like 30 years, I never came
close to an ascension. But players like me (an you) somehow
do help the TNNT clan you are in.

Not much to say about this. But if I ever ascend, I
know I will let the whole world know about it, everyday
for years :) In fact if I ever get near Gomorrah, I
will advertise it too.

Just to set it straight, at the time of posting I was confused - it is
"Gehennom" with regards to nethack. I've been wrestling fatigue for a
couple days after some Chinese food hit me wrong.

Where is a place to jockey for clan admission? It's probably too late
for Novemeber, but maybe I can get in a clan for Junethack.

It is too late, but the best place is to join #tnnt and/or
#hardfought on liberachat in IRC and ask to be invited to
a clan.

https://libera.chat/

I asked there and was invited. Yes, it is too late to
join a clan, that ended on Nov 10 :(

https://tnnt.org/faq#clans

But there is always next year, plus in June there is this,
and in IRC you have #junethack and #hardfought and #nethack

There's different things that I find interesting in Roguelikes;
e.g. reports of interesting solutions to encountered problems,
hilarious (and also stupid) deaths, sometimes also ascensions
(unless it's just a list of the end-game-dump information).

It should be clear that someone finding 10 pieces of gold on
dungeon level 1 is of minor interest to most of us. ;-)

Have you tried watching others to learn improving your play?
(In the far past times I occasionally found it helpful, e.g.
to learn about new tactics for specific situations.)

Given how hard it is for many (most?) people I think that's
not that astonishing.

Sure. :-)

As far as my faint memory serves, I accomplished my first
ascension after three years of "unsuccessfully" playing.[*]
Of course that event got posted, as did my second ascension
(two months later).

I have a couple of times. But for me I consider myself a
casual player. Plus all the different aspects are hard for
me to remember :) I just like wandering around seeing what
I can do and how far I c an get without thinking too much.
But I do pick up some things as a go on.

I’ve been playing for decades and I never ascended. But I always pick the
monk. I don’t feel bad or inadequate or anything.

Something is wrong with this "But". Monk is The Cruise Control to
Acsension. And still.

Not sure what this means. Are you saying Monk is these easiest
to ascend ? I thought I heard it was Valkyries. But that is
from an old memory :)

(Unless something has fundamentally changed in newer releases...)

Dwarven Valkyries are widely considered the easiest combination.
(Role and race matters!)

Monks (may) require a [slightly] different style of playing but
their characteristics (e.g. their intrinsics gained per level)
make them a considerably playable good choice. (On my list they
rank at place 5 [of 13] amongst the more successful roles.)
