Post by John McCuePost by Jhulian WaldbyI'll rack up some neat achievements but they are
dwarfed by others who know their shit.
There's different things that I find interesting in Roguelikes;
e.g. reports of interesting solutions to encountered problems,
hilarious (and also stupid) deaths, sometimes also ascensions
(unless it's just a list of the end-game-dump information).
It should be clear that someone finding 10 pieces of gold on
dungeon level 1 is of minor interest to most of us. ;-)
Post by John McCueI have been playing nethack for like 30 years, I never came
close to an ascension. [...]
Have you tried watching others to learn improving your play?
(In the far past times I occasionally found it helpful, e.g.
to learn about new tactics for specific situations.)
Post by John McCuePost by Jhulian WaldbyI'm tired of hearing about ascensions as if that was all
there was to the game.
Given how hard it is for many (most?) people I think that's
not that astonishing.
Post by John McCueNot much to say about this. But if I ever ascend, I
know I will let the whole world know about it, everyday
for years :) In fact if I ever get near Gomorrah, I
will advertise it too.
Sure. :-)
As far as my faint memory serves, I accomplished my first
ascension after three years of "unsuccessfully" playing.[*]
Of course that event got posted, as did my second ascension
(two months later).

typically you advance your proficiency. - "The journey is its
own reward.", as they say.
