For me it is rogue. Mine don't last very long. I think it has
something to do with the short sword. I picked up a blessed +3 scimitar
recently and it helped out but still an early death.

No wonder. I was overlooking throwing daggers again. The rogue appears
to be Cutpurse the Nymphslayer. Nymph takes one step before she dies.

All roles have their advantages and disadvantages, and you should
be aware of them to increase survivability. (Beside that there's
of course also differences in the various role's difficulty.)

Yes, you should use and train ranged daggers as soon as possible.
Wield one dagger for melee and use the others for ranged attacks.
With enhanced proficiency you get multi-shot of daggers increased.
Get your stack of daggers increased from the inhabitants of the
mines.
