Playing a samurai. There is a throne room on DLVL 12. A gnome or
bugbear dug a hole in the doorway blocking the only path to the
upstairs. My pick-axe is in a chest on DLVL 8. Now I'm on DLVL 14
trying to get back to it and correct the matter.

I got past the hole once by escaping it. Unfortunately I forgot to note
that it was there and got trapped behind it when I set my sights on
descending again.

It seems that a bum rush in hopes of escaping it is going to get me
starved to death. The odds just don't seem favorable. I must have
fallen down it 6 times so far.

I'll be damned if I'm going to starve to death without consulting for help.

Best game thus far. Previous best was a barbarian down to DLVL 9. I'm
really liking samurai. In contrast to the barbarian, they have a decent
charisma score. With my ring of adornment +2 I'm able to get normal
prices in shops. Also managed to pick up poison resistance fairly
early, and the only thing I have to get used to now is a Lawful
alignment. I could even go into two-handed swords or pole-arms if I
felt like it.

There's a couple options. If evading the hole fails a lot, there's
no boulders (or scrolls of earth) to fill the hole, no jumping or
levitation item available, no wand of teleport available for self
teleports, maybe it's an option to find a level with a vault and
look for a niche with a level-teleport trap to (randomly unless
having teleport control) locate you to an upper level. There's
also a chance to wait for (preferable hostile) a digging monster.
Sometimes there's yet undiscovered alternative paths to the stairs.

But I'd have thought that evading the hole might have the best odds
to get a success experience.

I think the full moon had something to do with it, but I discovered 7
uncursed food rations sitting around. What was good too was some water
walking boots, so that nothing is impeding my downward progress. Just a
matter of survival now until I get back. To me the moral of the story
is to keep going until it can be done. It seems you've also said that
about Sokoban before.

Unfortunately when I caught up to the gnome king he had used all the
charges of the wand. It opened another possibility - find a scroll of
charging. However, I was desperate and broke the wand which to my
chagrin does not pull out a digging zap.

It was a great game. Had about 10 altars, 4 of them aligned. Went to
sacrifice a cockatrice corpse with something nagging at the back of my
mind and turned to stone. That's a unique death I don't think I'll
repeat the rest of the month. Never made it back and by the time I was
done there were two holes between me and the 8th floor. I admit there
may have been some secret doors to help, but that would also incur a
cost in hunger searching. Was using Snickersnee, and not Excalibur.
